Einsturzende Neubauten - "Tabula Rasa". Sure, they were known for making hellish noise in their early days, employing rocks, circular saws, and drills in their performances, but they were musicians, too, crafting elegant songs by the late 1980s that still possess an affecting power. Tabula Rasa, released in 1993, contains all these elements and ups the ante considerably. For one thing, it's a much more varied listen than its predecessor, the grimly powerful Haus der Luge. The exuberantly melodic ("Zebulon") bumps up against the darkly experimental ("12305[te Nacht]") and the outright rockin' ("Die Interimsliebenden"). But the most startling track must be the ethereal "Blume," a sexually charged lullaby that's fraught with the thick layers of symbolism we've come to expect from lyricist Blixa Bargeld. Sung - in English! - by Anita Lane, whose voice registers somewhere near the Cranes' Alison Shaw, it sounds like nothing we've ever heard before from Neubauten. The disc closes with the 15-minute "Headcleaner," a mesmerizing, bombastic, symphonic cacophony. It all ends quietly, but your ears may never be the same again." MC Solaar - "Prose Combat". Rare and out-of-print. According to reviews, "This album can be appreciated on many levels. Students or native speakers of French will enjoy the humor and political commentary found in the lyrics, fans of jazz-rap will enjoy the synergy between the two genres found in the beats and fans of good hip-hop will simply enjoy listening to MC Solaar's flow. The lyrics of the album deal with some of the same topics that an American hip-hop album would deal with, however, they seem to go deeper into the topic. There are some quite confrontational tracks "Concubine D'le Hemoglobine" deals with the oppressive nature of war and "La Fin Justifie Les Moyens" is an exploration of the idea that the end justifies the means. The beats are roughly the same as any other jazz-rap record, samples from 50s jazz albums and so on, but they appear much more laid back when coupled with the French language. Solaar's flow is really what carries this album in my opinion. He has a clipped, precise delivery which can go on for up to 30 seconds acapella without sounding forced. Depending on the subject matter of the track, he can be both calm and laid back or confrontational - sometimes the delivery would appear on first listen to be the wrong one for the subject matter, later listens will reveal this to be a very clever effect." "Wings of Desire" Soundtrack - This is the soundtrack from Wim Wender's movie "Wings of Desire". According to reviews, "a little bit of everything can be found on this soundtrack to German director Wim Wenders's 1987 film: theme music, songs from the film, and even some dialogue. Institute Benjamenta VHS - By The Brothers Quay. The full title is "Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life". Rare and out-of-print. This amazing, and incredibly hard to find movie was the first feature-length, live action feature film by The Brothers Quay. New York Magazine called it "a great feast of fetishized imagery". Terry Gilliam called it "the most visually beautiful and hauntingly humorous film I have seen in the last three hundred years." The Village Voice heralded it as "the strangest, prettiest, most mesmerizing debut since Eraserhead." According to the box, "Institute Benjamenta combines the fantastic, the mystical, and the fairytale in a beautiful, shadowy reverie as astonishing and unique as any of the Quay's animations... Institute Benjamenta lures the audience through the labyrinthine corridors of the Institute and the entangled lives of its haunted occupants."
